December on My Back Porch

What better way to welcome the month of December? Snow! Squirrel was quite happy to see me set out peanuts! Just as I turned to go into the house, squirrel leapt off the tree branch and bounded toward the pile of peanuts on the back porch. The birdbath, filled with leaves and water, froze over... Firing Again

We had five spectacular sunny days in a row last week! I barely knew what to do with myself with so much sunshine. 🌞 Do I weed? Mow? Bask? Well, I ended up doing all the above: weeding, mowing and basking.😎 You may recall from my June 21st post, Notes From My Back Porch, I... Continue Reading →

Reflections

As I was attempting to summarize my thoughts on this past year and the new year, the following words from my morning readings came into focus: Teachable spirit Listening heart Speak less Fear is bigger than the fail Stories have power to teach and inspire HE is active in our story A shared story  God... New Hotness vs Old & Busted

I've been without a computer for two weeks.😥 My old one no longer supported updates needed to run my photo editing software or my internet browser.😥 So, my handsome IT guy 😍 enthusiastically started out with a plan of simply installing more memory. He quickly learned my old computer could not accommodate more memory which... Continue Reading →

Happy Groundhog Day!

Our resident groundhog, or something, never made an appearance today due to abundant snow and sunshine. But official word from Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania is we will have six more weeks of winter. Punxsutawney, PA – This morning, Pennsylvania’s own world-famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, predicting six more weeks of winter.  https://dced.pa.gov/newsroom/punxsutawney-phil-predicts-six-more-weeks-of-winter-for-2021/ Six more... A Message from BackPorchStudio

2020 has definitely been a challenge for me as well as so many other people. I lost my Mom in June. I lost my Mother-in-law in September. And I lost Missy Kitty in October. Though social media and blogging took a backseat, I have been blissfully busy filling orders @ etsy.com/shop/BackPorchStudio My inventory is low.... Continue Reading →

You Can Lead a Cat to Water

The back porch has a half dozen handmade pet dishes  filled to the brim with cool fresh water. I made them just for her, Miss Kitty. She prefers drinking from the Tonka dump truck. It used to be our son's now it's our grandson's Miss Kitty's. So, I keep it filled with cool fresh water.... Continue Reading →

Social Media, Mobile Phones and Glasses

Facebook. Twitter. Instagram. I'm finding the whole social media thing overwhelming. I can't seem to keep up. I started this blog to promote my business as a potter. Then I started a facebook page followed opening an instagram account. Blogging and facebook I can do from my desk top. Yeah! Instagram, not so much. Boo!... Continue Reading →

On Writing

Writers make writing look so easy.  Is writing as difficult for them as it is me?  I'm certainly not an avid writer but I do write: journals, letters, notes, lists.  I seem to be more of a lister than a writer.  I have many lists of things I want to write about.  The problem is... Checking In

Happy whatever day it is! With dear husband working from home since mid-March, it is as if every day is Saturday. Not that he works from home on Saturdays but he is home. Every day. Both of us in the house through the week has taken some getting used to. I think we will survive.... Continue Reading →

Was That Spring I heard?

Deep in the earth I woke, I stirred. I said: "Was that the Spring I heard? For something called!" "No, no," they said; "Go back to sleep. Go back to bed. You're far too soon; The world's too cold For you, so small," So I was told. But how could I go back to sleep? I... Continue Reading →

Hello! It’s Winter!

Hello from the blustery and snowy arctic tundra! Okay. Maybe not THE arctic tundra but from my back porch. Brrrr! Though it is winter, I have been playing in the mud inside where it is warm. I am looking forward to sharing with you my latest clay projects. Happy Friday!!!

Happy New Year!

I don’t know if it was just me or what but this holiday season seemed to fly by so quickly. I think father time is anxious to start a new decade! From our house to yours, Happy New Year!

Between Seasons

It seems as if just yesterday was early fall. Leaves changing from summer green to magnificent shades of red, yellow and orange then falling to the ground. As November came to a close, families gathered. A time to be thankful and overeat. The next season is upon us. Christmas and winter hard to ignore. Bare... Continue Reading →

Look Up

The calendar says it is October but summer is still here! Temperatures in the 90's. Shadows growing longer. Warm breeze. Dragon flies dart about. My eyes and soul can not get enough of the these clear blue skies and white puffy clouds. And falling to sleep to the sound of crickets and katydids in October... Continue Reading →

Enough Rain

At last, the sun shines today! The forecast, however, is calling for MORE RAIN over the next 10 days! Sigh. I'm growing tired of grey days and rain.

A View From My Back Porch

I usually don't complain about the weather unless it is cold. I do not like being cold. If it is below 70 degrees, that's it.  I'm complaining. This spring, however, I find myself complaining about the lack of sun light. Over the winter, I yearned for bright spring sunny days but so far we have... Continue Reading →

News! Not Breaking but News . . .

After much thought, reading, note-taking and collaboration with fellow potters, I think I have discovered the reason why I have had pin holes. #1:  The glazes were too thick. So early spring, I adjusted my glazes. The result was perfect on two of the three clay bodies. #2: It is a particular clay-body.   After talking... Continue Reading →

Hibernating, Not

It may seem as if I am hibernating after the holidays. Goodness knows, I certainly feel as if I could! January and February are quickly becoming my favorite months of the year;  a respite from the hustle and bustle of the holidays. A time to relax and rejuvenate - change of pace. It may look... Happy New Year!

A new week!

A new day!

Hooray!

I made no New Year’s resolutions. In fact, a long time ago I resolved not to make New Year’s resolutions. Instead  I decided to make daily resolutions or, as some may call them, daily affirmations.  Daily resolutions are much less daunting. The intent is for the day rather than for a WHOLE year.  Think about that . . .a WHOLE year. That is 365 days!

I do set long term goals such as eating healthier, exercising more, getting more sleep and not swearing (as much) but these goals need tweaking through the year because, as we all know, LIFE happens – circumstances beyond our control; so daily resolutions can be tweaked to suit fluid life situations.

Tweaking daily resolutions requires learning how to forgive yourself when a resolution has not been met.  It is far too easy to fall into…

Words

Not much pottery today but a lot of neglected behind the scene stuff. I spent the better part of today at the computer thinking of words. Words. Words describing my pottery in my Etsy shop. I use words every day yet when I try to write, words are elusive. This is why I am not a... Continue Reading →
