One of our many visitors this summer! One of the reasons I love throwing on our back porch! I had my hands in clay. Grabbed my camera and took a shot! My camera is a little muddy .

Waiting for me in my splash pan this morning! The frog wanna-be-potter was placed just off the back porch onto a nice cool shady rock. The frog climbed up onto a fern frond. The frog watched me for a seemingly very long time. I honestly thought it was contemplating whether or not to leap back … More Just Frogging Around
It has been a bit hot on my back porch this month. I have been firing loads of greenware (air dried unfired clay) in the kiln for a bisque firing. The bisque firing prepares the air dried clay (greenware) for glazing. Days are growing shorter. Kids are back in school. It is the end of … More Summer! Where did you go?
Due to the rain and high humidity, the weeds have taken over. I’m reading a lot about common weeds. Why? Because they are everywhere! I’ve learned their names too: Purslane, Yellow Wood Sorel (also known as sour grass)and Spotted Spurge. Apparently, weeds can tell you about the nature of the soil. Our soil seems to … More It’s A Jungle Out There

The back porch has a half dozen handmade pet dishes filled to the brim with cool fresh water. I made them just for her, Miss Kitty. She prefers drinking from the Tonka dump truck. The sunflowers made it despite the critters of early spring and summer. You never now how strong you are, until being strong is your only choice. ~Bob Marley
Who doesn’t love sunflowers? Creatures big and small love sunflowers! I started planting sunflowers early spring all to have a creature eat every last sunflower seed! I suspect a squirrel. I planted another round sunflower seeds. Thrilled to see them sprout to six to twelve inches in height! Yeah! Much to my despair, a rabbit … More Sunflowers Maybe
Life has completely turned upside down since the changing of the clocks back in March of 2020. At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if the dinosaurs returned. Today, the dinosaurs have, indeed, returned much to our grandson’s delight! I am delighted the dinosaurs prefer lettuce over sunflowers!
While technology continues not to be my friend, I continue to shoot and throw things! The good news is that the company we sent our external hard drive too expects to be able to retrieve our data with 78% certainty in which my photos are HIGH priority, 78% doesn’t sound too optimistic but I am … More UPDATE
I usually don’t complain about the weather unless it is cold. I do not like being cold. If it is below 70 degrees, that’s it. I’m complaining. This spring, however, I find myself complaining about the lack of sun light. Over the winter, I yearned for bright spring sunny days but so far we have … More A View From My Back Porch

I have been using 112 brown clay for over ten years and have never experienced the problems with grog as I have this year. The particle size of the grog seems unusually large causing a lot of damage and heartbreak. 😦 Looks like I will be looking for a new clay. Save
UPDATE: 24 Hours Later! Delicious! Family says ‘not quite Claussen but close!” In other words, they are a hit! Taking a short break from pottery today to make pickles. I do not like canning in the late summer because, well, it’s just too hot! So I have been searching for “easy” refrigerator pickle recipes and … More It’s Cucumber Season!
I have been putting off making mugs because I have struggled so with making handles. It has been FIVE years since I made a mug. Glazed Bottoms or Bare Naked Bottoms? These are my newest pieces: free formed shaped bowls made from a slab of clay slumped over a plaster mold. They are becoming my favorite to make; however, when it comes to glazing I cannot decide whether to glaze the bottoms or leave them bare and naked. Which do … More Bottoms. Glazed or Bare?
I am getting ready for my 2nd glaze firing. I am trying to be more meticulous about the glazing process and spread it out over a few days rather than do it ALL in one day. When I try to do ALL in one day, I grow tired and very impatient which is not a … More Glazing Day
